As a trained engineer, I knew I that was not a fan of poetry. However, a preacher challenged that assumption. He would preach from time to time at my church and he always ended his sermon with a poem. To my surprise, I was entranced every time. So I came to realize that I had just been reading the wrong poems (thanks again, high school English class).
Here are some Christian poems that have become precious to me over the years. Maybe you’ll like them, too.
- “Run, John, run” by John Bunyan
- Prayer (I) and Love (III) by George Herbert
- “Dark Night of the Soul” by John of the Cross
- “To go to Rome” by Sedulius of Liege
- The Hound of Heaven by Francis Thompson
- Taliesin’s Vision by Stephen Lawhead
- The Deer’s Cry by Patrick of Ireland
- God Knows by Minnie Louise Haskins
- Death Be Not Proud by John Donne
- Himself by A.B. Simpson
- Jesus of the Scars by Edward Shillito
- Christ Has No Body by Theresa of Avila
- Covenant by Margaret Halaska
- A Hymn to God the Father by John Donne
